We are not smart enough to leave things to the Market. (via Dead Wild Roses)

I haven’t read the book, but I’m sure it should be required reading.

We are not smart enough to leave things to the Market. As I am often told by my free market indoctrinated friends the market will solve societies problems, if….(insert the big whingy diatribe about government interfering here) it was just left to its own devices. A sample of the pap I usually hear, coherently summarized by Mr.Chang and his book I happen to be reading right now. “We should leave markets alone, because, essentially, market participants know what they are doing – that is, they are rat … Read More

Why Americans Think (Wrongly) Immigration Hurts the Economy –

Immigration is a divisive issue for Americans. Both legal and illegal worry people when the economy turns down. Of course those who enter our country illegally are much easier to vilify. They are not really criminals–but they are not here legitimately either.

These facts make the issue one that is ripe for exploitation by people and groups who want to manipulate people.

This Newsweek article:  Why Americans Think Immigration Hurts the Economy – points out that immigration overall has a positive effect on our economy but lists several reasons why people do not see it that way.

One of the reasons is the outcry in the media about criminals entering our country illegally, poor women and children coming here to soak up all of our free services and depriving citizens of access because of it or women having babies here to make it easier for them to stay as parents of a US citizen, and not paying taxes because they aren’t earning money legally.Stop the Invasion

First off, the people who enter or stay in our country without permission are not criminals until they defy a criminal statute. And while many do break laws with fraudulent documentation, driving without a license, and failing to file income taxes they do pay taxes. They pay taxes because they work for companies who automatically take out the taxes and send them to the tax collecting agencies of the State and Federal governments. And they pay sales tax and their money goes to pay property taxes whether for their own homes or through paying rent to landlords.

Safety fluid was removed before oil rig exploded in Gulf |

Thom Hartmann posted information from an article in the New Orléans Times-Picayune about the Gulf Oil Well explosion.Oil Rig Explosion Fire

An employee from the oil rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico has reported through an attorney that the company made an error while capping an exploratory drilling hole that exacerbated the explosion. The company had ordered mud be removed before pouring the concrete caps to secure the exploratory site. The mud is usually used as a buffer to prevent explosions in just such cases.

But that’s not the highlight of the post. The company had 6 executives on the rig at the time to acknowledge the safety award the company had recently received. The speculation is that they were in a hurry to get the rig looking ship-shape for the arrival of the bigwhigs. How ironic! Get a safety award and drop safety steps to have a picture-perfect ceremony–and KABLOOEY!! it all goes up in smoke and oil. The article is online here:  Safety fluid was removed before oil rig exploded in Gulf |

Also on Thom Hartmann’s site in the Community pages:  The Reason Oil is Still Spilling.

“Oil is still spewing is because all options are based in still trying to turn that hole into a profit making well.

[No one] is considering that the Navy could bomb the hole, caving it in and closing it.”

Too bad our society often puts such value on appearances rather than safety. Maybe next time, something incomplete when the VIPs arrive will be grounds for recognition rather than dismissal because it saves lives instead of being “nice & pretty.”

Is Corn Killing Us?

I don’t mean to be repetitive, but I’ve been reading the blog of  Chris Prillo Lockergnome Extraordinaire today and have found quite a bit of inspiration there. I even posted on essay to another blog so I wouldn’t over do it here.

His post, Corn Kills More People Than Terrorists Do, points out that terrorism has killed a very small number of people this year compared to the number who die of obesity. Of course his readers made all kinds of excuses for why this fact is irrelevant or misleading. This graphic was included:Corn Terrorism Graphic

Complaints were lodged that we can’t prove corn causes obesity, obesity is a choice–terrorism isn’t, people die from old age so why don’t we work to outlaw getting old.

I restrained myself from posting a comment this time. But I knew I had to discuss it. Continue reading

Foxconn Chinese Employees just one symptom of the disease

Chris Prillo's headMy favorite Iowa expat, Chris Prillo, shone a light on an injustice in the tech community again on his blog. Writing from information gleaned from an article on M.I.C. Gadget:  The Real Truth Behind Foxconn’s Suicide Cluster. The M.I.C. Gadget article had a translation of the text from an article by a Chinese journalist who went undercover at the factory to see the conditions first hand.

Chris points out that the company is treating their employees as less than human and since they are making hundreds of millions of dollars in profits, they could pay them more, make them work fewer hours, and offer them a more stimulating work environment.

Kudos to you Chris!!

One of the commenters made the observation that the conditions are the result of the open market for labor. Another blamed the oppressive Chinese government. After these two comments, I just couldn’t remain silent! I spoke directly to the second issue, but the first is the underlying problem with unregulated capitalism.

These people are living in the worst position at the conjunction of several bad cultural paradigms. China is experimenting with allowing private enterprise to produce rewards for its citizens. The North American & much of the European market is full of people clamoring for more and more technology and other stuff for less and less money. Continue reading
